World's 1st LNG-Fueled Bulk Carrier With High Manganese Steel Tank
World's first bulk carrier equipped with LNG fuel tank made of high manganese steel will begin operation starting next year after a christening ceremony held on Dec. 22, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.
Built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, the LNG carrier named Green Iris will deliver limestone from Donghae in Gangwon Province to Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province for the country's leading steelmaker POSCO.
It will be fueled with LNG from a tanker of Korea Gas Corp. at Donghae Port. LNG is dubbed to be one of the most cost-effective and environmentally-friendly options for marine fuel. The high manganese steel is capable of carrying and storing LNG at ultra-low temperature of 196 degrees Celsius below.
