Innovation-Driven Growth & Future-Looking Challenge
Focus of 2018 Korean Economic Policies

Deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong Yeon presided over the 11th Ministerial Meeting on the Economy, held on December 20, and discussed the 2018 economic policies and how to support the administration's healthcare plans.  Deputy Prime Minister Kim also stressed that the government needs to be thoroughly prepared for the minimum wage support, scheduled to be implemented in January 2018.

The following is a summary of Deputy Prime Minister Kim's keynote address:

2018 Economic Policies
Although the Korean economy is expected to post 3 percent growth in 2017, challenges, such as slowing job growth and low birth rates coupled with ageing population, have been threatening the economy's long-term prospect.  The 2018 economic policies will focus on addressing those mid-to-long-term challenges, as well as on 'growth through innovation'.

Support the Administration's National Healthcare Plans
The government will support the administration's national healthcare plans announced last August, which is aimed at expanding the national healthcare insurance coverage and strengthening healthcare support for low income households.  To ease worries over a financial burden, the government will work hard to successfully implement the new health system without any financial problems.  We will work to

- Increase spending efficiency
- Utilize some of the savings in the national healthcare account
- Increase fiscal support
- Adjust insurance rates
